Erosion Control

Soil erosion is a naturally occurring process that affects all landforms. In most cases, erosion is caused by improper soil compaction, low organic matter, loss of soil structure and poor internal drainage. Just because you don’t see gullies or mudslides doesn’t mean that erosion isn’t occurring. The process can be very subtle. Look for symptoms such as exposed roots, signs of splashing of soil or mud on pavement. You may not see it on your own property, but runoff from your yard may be evident farther down the street. Rip Rap

We will create a landscape with large harvested boulders used for boulder walls, ornamental out crop and stone benches. Build a perennial garden to invite birds and butterflies into your yard. We will use a mix of perennials, shrubs and ornamental trees. Plant spruce and pine trees for winter colors or for a screen from adjacent properties. Black Hills Spruce, Norway Pine, White Pine and Cedar are the most common to this area. Although you should stay away from Cedar iand White Pine if you have deer around your property, as these specie of trees are a treat for them.

Native Plants

Native plants can be used around homes and in gardens to create sustainable landscapes. Most native plants are perennial and have extensive root systems that hold soil and slow runoff. Persistent stems, leaves, and flower parts which remain through the winter also reduce runoff, especially in the spring, as snow melts and rainfall begins before new growth is present. Particulate matter accumulates around these native plants and the plants themselves absorb chemicals such as nitrogen and phosphorous that would otherwise enter the runoff.

Native plants have many positive characteristics. Native plants used as buffer strips along water margins slow runoff and absorb nutrients. They are also self-sustaining, and they support wildlife including beneficial insects, pollinators, and native birds.

Successfully growing native plants requires an understanding of the evolutionary adaptations plants make to specific light and soil moisture conditions. Prairie plants have adapted to dry, sunny uplands, while woodland plants tolerate shade. Wet meadows contain plants species tolerant of sun and wet soils, while plant species in the emergent zone grow with their stems above water and their roots in water. Beach Sand

Not all lakes have sandy shorelines and very few lakes have sandy shores around the entire perimeter. Creating a sandy beach can be a difficult, expensive proposition, and the beach may not last more than a few years. If the lakeshore at your property is already sandy, creating a sandy beach is relatively straightforward. It is much more difficult to establish a sandy beach in areas with mucky bottoms. Regulations may allow you to add a beach sand blanket, though there are some limitations regarding what is allowed. Recognize that the sand you haul in may be expensive, may damage nearshore habitat, and can compact upland soils. In addition, the sand will probably need to be replaced regularly. If you add sand, use the largest available grain size to provide the greatest stability. Beach sand should not be added where it destroys fish or wildlife habitat, wild rice, or other protected vegetation. The natural gravel and silt found near shore provides habitat for spawning fish, burrowing insects, and tadpoles. Adding sand can smother and destroy that habitat. Rather than creating a sandy beach for swimming, consider anchoring a floating platform offshore. We understand what you can and can not do.

Perhaps you wish to create a flat recreational space where you can place patio furniture and decorative elements. Or you might wish to combat an erosion problem that is eating away at your shoreline. 1) Have plat available or a survey of your property.  Most lake front homeowners actually own property into the lake. Whether this was deeded at the time of purchase or because of property erosion it is yours to maintain.

2) We will help you choose material that is TDEC approved. Concrete, rip rap, Versa-Lok blocks to mention a few.  Because of environmental issues treated lumber and railroad ties are unacceptable materials for the lake.

3) Once material is chosen and we have determined your property line, we will help you submit a plan to the property manager. The plan will be submitted to the CWL board for approval.  We will not start any work until the project has been approved.

Seasonal Plantings

The season for garden care typically starts in late March and continues, periodically, into December. During this time there is significant work to be performed in the perennial garden: spring clean-up, fertilization, compost application, division, deadheading, weeding, staking, insect and disease management, cutting back and winterizing are all on-going activities. Spring and fall tend to be more active than other months, but there is always work that can be done to ensure the greatest flower production and best plant health possible.

Sod Installation

Rejuvenating an existing lawn with fertilizer and weed control treatments can only accomplish so much. In some cases, lawns are too far gone to salvage and must be sodded. In these instances, an on-site evaluation is performed to diagnose the reason why grass was lost in the first place. Typically, grass is lost to poor or faulty irrigation, insect infestation, fungal disease, shade, or leaf smothering. A combination of any of these factors can result in even further grass loss. Before we install new sod, we always attempt to remedy the underlying problem in order to protect the material and labor investment. If the problem area is not capable of growing healthy grass, we will offer an alternative, long term solution such as ground cover , ornamental plants, stone, or mulch.

Trees and shrubs can add beauty, shade, wind and screen block and value to your property. A properly planted tree or shrub will give you added beauty and functionality to your landscape. Our trees and shrubs are grown locally to ensure a proper fit to the elements. We guarantee our trees and shrubs will be healthy, happy plants at the time of planting. We will sketch a plan of your house and landscape. Include any existing garden beds, borders, trees and shrubs. Than we study the direction of the light. East means early morning sun and shade in the afternoon. The north side is coldest, so we only choose the hardiest plants for that location. South and west are the hottest. We will give you a plan for water. We will show you how we allow enough space for mature growth. We never plant trees too close to power lines, underground pipes, your home’s foundation, walkways or other trees. Finally we encourage clients to enroll in our plant care plan.

Lawn Preparation

Lawn preparation starts with preparing the ground. Preparation for laying sod or sowing seed should begin well before you plan to sow the seed or lay the sod. The native soil needs to be agitated, weeds and other materials should be cleared from the area and a fresh coating of fertile soil should be placed before sowing or laying sod. This ensures a great base for the seed to germinate or the sod roots to take hold. There is no doubt the best quality lawn will come from seeding, but this very much depends on how well the new grass is cared for in the first few weeks after germination, and to be honest this is a very difficult task for anyone who is not a trained green-keeper. We would always advise laying turf on a domestic lawn as the first option because the aftercare is so much easier. The ground preparation is exactly the same for both options.

Walkways & Steps

Steps are like miniature terraces; the steeper the slope, the more frequently they are needed. On a mild slope, each step becomes a long landing, with the distance between steps varying with the slopes pitch. Step width is up to the discretion of the builder, but 4 feet is a safe minimum for most people to feel comfortable, especially if they are carrying a load. The height of the steps, however, should be in keeping with what feels natural and comfortable to walk on; 7 inches is the accepted standard.
