Erosion Control
Soil erosion is a naturally occurring process that affects all landforms. In most cases, erosion is caused by improper soil compaction, low organic matter, loss of soil structure and poor internal drainage. Just because you don’t see gullies or mudslides doesn’t mean that erosion isn’t occurring. The process can be very subtle. Look for symptoms such as exposed roots, signs of splashing of soil or mud on pavement. You may not see it on your own property, but runoff from your yard may be evident farther down the street. To combat these affects, you may find many options. It is best to contact us to plan out the correct solution for your scenario.
Shoreline Restoration
It is very important to prevent erosion from destroying your shoreline, because once a portion of your valuable land erodes into the lake, it cannot be replaced. The best solution is to secure your property from erosion before it happens by installing riprap (natural boulders/stone of various sizes) along the natural shape of your shoreline. This will provide a low maintenance solution to erosion problems while giving your property a neater appearance. To many clients, access down to the lake from the property is a concern, so we provide several options of beautiful natural stone steps that match the stone used to stabilize the shoreline. Installing these steps down to the lake will make your property more functional.
If you have a shoreline with limited land access, we can repair it during the winter time, using the frozen lake to transport materials and equipment to your property. We also stay aware of the ever-changing regulations and requirements from the county and DNR associated with lakeshore restoration. This allows us to help you as much as we can with the intimidating amount of paperwork involved during the process of obtaining a lakeshore restoration permit. Act now to take the necessary steps to preserve your shoreline before it’s too late!
Rip Rap
We will create a landscape with large harvested boulders used for boulder walls, ornamental out crop and stone benches. Build a perennial garden to invite birds and butterflies into your yard. We will use a mix of perennials, shrubs and ornamental trees. Plant spruce and pine trees for winter colors or for a screen from adjacent properties. Black Hills Spruce, Norway Pine, White Pine and Cedar are the most common to this area. Although you should stay away from Cedar iand White Pine if you have deer around your property, as these specie of trees are a treat for them.
Flagstone patios and walkways are very inviting and great for entertaining. Outdoor cooking areas are becoming more popular as it is the same as adding a room to your home. Add a stone staircase on sloped areas to add ease to get to your dock or the lower level of your property.
Landscape ideas are endless. We take great pride in our landscapes and we enjoy what we do.
Native Plants
Native plants can be used around homes and in gardens to create sustainable landscapes. Most native plants are perennial and have extensive root systems that hold soil and slow runoff. Persistent stems, leaves, and flower parts which remain through the winter also reduce runoff, especially in the spring, as snow melts and rainfall begins before new growth is present. Particulate matter accumulates around these native plants and the plants themselves absorb chemicals such as nitrogen and phosphorous that would otherwise enter the runoff.
Native plants have many positive characteristics. Native plants used as buffer strips along water margins slow runoff and absorb nutrients. They are also self-sustaining, and they support wildlife including beneficial insects, pollinators, and native birds.
Successfully growing native plants requires an understanding of the evolutionary adaptations plants make to specific light and soil moisture conditions. Prairie plants have adapted to dry, sunny uplands, while woodland plants tolerate shade. Wet meadows contain plants species tolerant of sun and wet soils, while plant species in the emergent zone grow with their stems above water and their roots in water. Submerged or floating leaf plants have stems and leaves under water with some parts above water. Call us today and we will help you set up a plan.
Beach Sand
Not all lakes have sandy shorelines and very few lakes have sandy shores around the entire perimeter. Creating a sandy beach can be a difficult, expensive proposition, and the beach may not last more than a few years. If the lakeshore at your property is already sandy, creating a sandy beach is relatively straightforward. It is much more difficult to establish a sandy beach in areas with mucky bottoms. Regulations may allow you to add a beach sand blanket, though there are some limitations regarding what is allowed. Recognize that the sand you haul in may be expensive, may damage nearshore habitat, and can compact upland soils. In addition, the sand will probably need to be replaced regularly. If you add sand, use the largest available grain size to provide the greatest stability. Beach sand should not be added where it destroys fish or wildlife habitat, wild rice, or other protected vegetation. The natural gravel and silt found near shore provides habitat for spawning fish, burrowing insects, and tadpoles. Adding sand can smother and destroy that habitat. Rather than creating a sandy beach for swimming, consider anchoring a floating platform offshore. We understand what you can and can not do.
Retaining Walls & Systems
You might choose to build a retaining wall on your lakefront property for a variety of reasons. Perhaps you wish to create a flat recreational space where you can place patio furniture and decorative elements. Or you might wish to combat an erosion problem that is eating away at your shoreline. No matter what your reasons, there are many ideas you may wish to consider when choosing the appropriate lakefront retaining wall for your individual situation. Call us and have your ideas and any plans in hand.
1) Have plat available or a survey of your property. Most lake front homeowners actually own property into the lake. Whether this was deeded at the time of purchase or because of property erosion it is yours to maintain.
2) We will help you choose material that is TDEC approved. Concrete, rip rap, Versa-Lok blocks to mention a few. Because of environmental issues treated lumber and railroad ties are unacceptable materials for the lake.
3) Once material is chosen and we have determined your property line, we will help you submit a plan to the property manager. The plan will be submitted to the CWL board for approval. We will not start any work until the project has been approved.
Rain Gardens
A rain garden is a functional landscaped area constructed to capture and hold storm water so that it infiltrates into the soil rather than becoming surface runoff. Rain gardens not only beautify an area, they bring larger benefits to the environment, both locally and beyond.
Rain garden function is the result of careful planning and measurement. The goal of a properly functioning rain garden is to reduce polluted storm water runoff and recharge the water table. Call us for a meeting today!
Seasonal Plantings
The season for garden care typically starts in late March and continues, periodically, into December. During this time there is significant work to be performed in the perennial garden: spring clean-up, fertilization, compost application, division, deadheading, weeding, staking, insect and disease management, cutting back and winterizing are all on-going activities. Spring and fall tend to be more active than other months, but there is always work that can be done to ensure the greatest flower production and best plant health possible.
During the growing season there are many opportunities to complement perennial and mixed beds with freely flowering annuals. Parterre works with the finest local growers and can select beautiful seasonal plants to add an additional layer of color to your garden.
Sod Installation
Rejuvenating an existing lawn with fertilizer and weed control treatments can only accomplish so much. In some cases, lawns are too far gone to salvage and must be sodded. In these instances, an on-site evaluation is performed to diagnose the reason why grass was lost in the first place. Typically, grass is lost to poor or faulty irrigation, insect infestation, fungal disease, shade, or leaf smothering. A combination of any of these factors can result in even further grass loss. Before we install new sod, we always attempt to remedy the underlying problem in order to protect the material and labor investment. If the problem area is not capable of growing healthy grass, we will offer an alternative, long term solution such as ground cover , ornamental plants, stone, or mulch.
Trees - Shrubs - Sod - Seed
- Excess shade from untrimmed trees
- Leaf and debris build up
- Grub worms, chinch bugs, or other insect infestations
- Fungal disease due to climate or over watering
- Malfunctioning sprinklers
- Depleted soil
- Lack of fertilizer
- Poor sprinkler coverage
- Lack of required water
Tree & Shrub Planting
Trees and shrubs can add beauty, shade, wind and screen block and value to your property. A properly planted tree or shrub will give you added beauty and functionality to your landscape. Our trees and shrubs are grown locally to ensure a proper fit to the elements. We guarantee our trees and shrubs will be healthy, happy plants at the time of planting. We will sketch a plan of your house and landscape. Include any existing garden beds, borders, trees and shrubs. Than we study the direction of the light. East means early morning sun and shade in the afternoon. The north side is coldest, so we only choose the hardiest plants for that location. South and west are the hottest. We will give you a plan for water. We will show you how we allow enough space for mature growth. We never plant trees too close to power lines, underground pipes, your home’s foundation, walkways or other trees. Finally we encourage clients to enroll in our plant care plan.
Lawn Preparation
Lawn preparation starts with preparing the ground. Preparation for laying sod or sowing seed should begin well before you plan to sow the seed or lay the sod. The native soil needs to be agitated, weeds and other materials should be cleared from the area and a fresh coating of fertile soil should be placed before sowing or laying sod. This ensures a great base for the seed to germinate or the sod roots to take hold. There is no doubt the best quality lawn will come from seeding, but this very much depends on how well the new grass is cared for in the first few weeks after germination, and to be honest this is a very difficult task for anyone who is not a trained green-keeper. We would always advise laying turf on a domestic lawn as the first option because the aftercare is so much easier. The ground preparation is exactly the same for both options.
Patio Pavers
Nothing beats the popularity of patios when the talk is about extending the outdoor living space. Patio is versatile, functional, and durable. If built correctly, this space can replace the living room or the dining area as the favorite hangout place of the family. Why not? The patio can be as cozy as the living room and can be as inviting as the dining area. But unlike the two indoor spaces, the patio exposes you to the soft breeze and gentle warmth of the sun.
No big or small patio will come to life without constructing the floor surface first. For that, patio pavers are the best pick. They are durable, low-maintenance, and available in endless array of colors and styles. Brick pavers add to that unique patio feel. They also naturally blend to any furniture or design elements that will be added in the area. No wonder why walkways made out of brick pavers are fast becoming the trend. Call us today and we will set up a plan.

Water Features
Landscape water features serve many purposes, including being pieces of artwork, places to swim or raise fish and sources of gentle sound effects. Water features can add an element of the exotic to your property, but they require careful maintenance in order for them to function properly, operate safely, and not become an eyesore.
Did you grow up with birdbaths in your yard? Those heavy, two-piece concrete creations held water beautifully and could be positioned on any flat space in your yard. But, many were unwieldy, difficult to move and impossible to clean.

Walkways & Steps
Steps are like miniature terraces; the steeper the slope, the more frequently they are needed. On a mild slope, each step becomes a long landing, with the distance between steps varying with the slopes pitch. Step width is up to the discretion of the builder, but 4 feet is a safe minimum for most people to feel comfortable, especially if they are carrying a load. The height of the steps, however, should be in keeping with what feels natural and comfortable to walk on; 7 inches is the accepted standard.
Landscaping steps come in many styles, textures and colors. From natural stone, concrete products to treated lumber. From designing your landscape to installing the products chosen, Lakeside Landscape Inc can help guide you to the right solution.
Driveways
Driveways come in many shapes and sizes. When surfacing your driveway, it is very important to take in consideration the amount of load you expect your driveway to hold. Improper calculation can result in an uneven surface, cracking, breaking and or lifting and sinking. There are many different options to consider when choosing a product for your driveway surface. Contact us today, we would be more than happy to assist in the design, product choice, and installation.
Storm Water Management
The benefits of effective stormwater runoff management can include: protection of wetlands and aquatic ecosystems, improved quality of receiving waterbodies, conservation of water resources, protection of public health, and flood control. Traditional stormwater management approaches that rely on peak flow storage have generally not targeted pollutant reduction and can exacerbate problems associated with changes in hydrology and hydraulics.
